Personal Bankruptcies off to Slow Start

Yet another sign of an improving economy is the decline in the rate of personal bankruptcy filings during the early weeks of 2004. Using data compiled from courthouse records, the National Bankruptcy Research Center (Lundquist Consulting, Burlingame, CA) reports that through the first three weeks of 2004 (January 24), personal bankruptcy filings are down 5.1% from the same period in 2003. The chart below displays week-by-week filings over the past four years.
